Good golly miss molly! It’s been just over 5 years since I started wearing vintage cat eye glasses on a daily basis. Can you believe it? Me neither! I decided the best way to celebrate this momentous occasion was to splash out and add another pair to my glorious collection. But this pair would have to be special in their own way. The challenge? To find my first pair of modernly made wing tip glasses.
Given I’ve been wearing glasses every day since my tweens, I think it’s fair to say I know my stuff when it comes to shopping for spectacles. I’ve literally spent years perusing the high street for vintage inspired specs over my lifetime, but all I’ve found are limp ones that have been severely lacking in charm and charisma. What’s the point in buying retro specs if they’re not going to look incredibly fantastic? The design should scream 1950s, not whimper it like its a dirty word. This is what got me scouring the lands for vintage glasses in the first place; but I’ve always had to have a pair of glasses at home to wear in bed and watch movies on the sofa in, because killing glasses due to falling asleep and rolling on your face is the saddest story ever. Over the past few years I’ve worn geek glasses, but they never really make me feel like myself, you know? So this challenge seemed perfect; buy myself some new vintage inspired glasses that can withstand modern day wear and tear. What a great way to spend my evenings!
After raiding the high street stores, it became apparent quite quickly that I was not going to get what I was looking for in the UK, so I became delightfully obsessed with googling cat eye glasses online. Although I found a few cute pairs, nothing really spoke to me and I was starting to loose hope. And then I stumbled upon the finest pair of wing tips I’ve seen in a while . . . and they’re MODERN!
BonLook is an online company which ships from America, and this has fast become my favourite site for spectacle porn. They have so many beautiful frames and such a diverse collection! You can virtually try on glasses and order them with your prescription in, which I had become familiar with thanks to ordering from Firmo.com a while back. When I clocked these pearlescent lily white Keiko frames my heart started to flutter and the search was over. This is a game changer people!
Thanks to being 20% off, I snapped them up immediately. I bet you’re thinking “glasses from America, eh? Bet those cost a fortune!” Well boo to you reader, you couldn’t be more wrong. These frames + lenses + case + shipping fee = £75. And that even included custom fees so they didn’t get held back by the courier. BEST. BUY. EVER. Dear specky four eye friends, the days of spending over 100 pounds on modern glasses are over. We are no longer a financial slave to our poor eyesight! They only took a couple of weeks to arrive and they are beautiful. FYI, I’ve not been paid to write this post, I’m just a pervert for eyewear. This post has been written from my heart.
I’ve been wearing them daily for over a few weeks now, and I even took them on my trip to London and I can genuinely tell you that I cant think of a single thing to complain about. The frames are great quality, the hinges strong, overall, the weight is light and they’re very comfortable. I have a pretty small head (I’m only 5 ft) and I was thrilled to bits when they fit comfortably around my face. My Geek Glasses had to have the legs bent out slightly so they wouldn’t fall off (I do love my Gok Wans though!), but these sit perfectly. The legs are a little on the long side for me, but I know I could take them to Spex Pistols and sweet talk them into reshaping them should that ever bother me. As it stands, they don’t slide down my nose very often, and on the few occasion they have, it’s made me feel like a sexy librarian, so I don’t really care. I’m yet to experience any serious mishaps in them (although this week I have already tripped over twice, worn them to ariel yoga and had a blender full of soup explode on me whilst wearing them and they’ve survived every moment!), they’re so well made I don’t think I would have even noticed.
In summery, I am a massive fan of BonLook, and I will be back, guaranteed. Keiko frames come in black and tortoise shell, so I’ll be ordering them up asap for my collection thankyouverymuch.
Do you have a favourite online glasses shop? I’d love to hear all about it! Share the deets here my friends 🙂
