I might be 30 now, but there are still a ridiculous amount of things I’ve not tried yet and have always wanted to. One day I dream of being a roller derby gal, but I can’t even skate! So when I heard we were going to Edinburghs Roller Stop roller disco for part of Helen’s birthday weekend, I was crazy excited … but also insanely nervous!
Always one to give things a good go, my fear of falling over was not going to hold me back this time. I hired a pair of roller skates, got me some wrist guards on and hit the floor… I might have looked like Bambi for those first few rounds of the hall, but actually I got really into it! The hardest part for me is stopping – the breaks being on the front of the shoe always makes me topple over. I had one bad fall on my hip at the start, but otherwise I made it out in one piece. Well, with my first sore fall out of the way I got over the fear of it happening again plus I have a bad ass memory of my first time on skates!
I’ve got to admit that now I’ve had a go at it I’m definitely going to go back and keep up the momentum. Roller skating is a great way to stay in shape without hitting the gym, which is all good in my books. The faster you go the more you burn and the more fun you have! Having said that, I think I can only go at a ‘light jogging’ pace, but it’s a great place to start considering I could barely stand up when I first put the shoes on!
So I’m one step closer to my roller derby dream and I’m seriously ecstatic to have tried something new … I don’t think I’ll be reaching derby status any time soon, but it’s nice to have a goal in the ole ‘fit n healthy’ department. For those of you who’ve never taken the plunge for fear of falling, I can honestly tell you you’re missing out. No one cares that you’ve taken a topple, they just care that you’re not hurt. Just remember that everyone is in the same boat, everyone started out the same as you and at the end of the day, falling is never as bad as you expect it to be!
