DIY: How To Make Your Own Scratch Cards!

October 1, 2012 missV 14 Comments

Hello!
We are super excited to have reached our 100 sales in our etsy boutique and to celebrate we have decided to give our customers the chance to win something great with each transaction made in our shop. Fun, right? Being the quirky folk that we are, we wanted to do it in an extra special way… by giving you Vivid Please scratch cards of course!
There is nothing more satisfying than scratching off the panel on one of those cards to reveal a code and a treat… it’s just too exciting! So we decided that there was no better way to spoil our favorite people. With 5 different rewards up for grabs, you can win either 10% off or 15% off, or even a free print, pencil or free keepsake card with your next order! Awesome, right? But how did we create such a magical thing? Well, let me tell you…
You will need:
Washing up liquid
Acrylic paint
Measuring spoons
An old jar
A brush
Your card (you can do this with many types of card, but we recommend matt coated)
Start by taping down your cards so they don’t scoot about when you start painting. You may want to mask off the areas you don’t want painted for straight lines, but you will need to remember to be extra careful when removing the tape after it has dried as it may tear off your new coating too.
Make sure to try this out on a scrap of the same card before you start painting everything in sight too! It’s best to trial the mixture to make sure it is the right consistency for your material 🙂
So, how do you make the paint scratch off? By adding washing up liquid!
Mix 1 part washing up liquid to 2 parts paint and gently stir using your paint brush so it mixes together but doesn’t go too bubbly. It’s that simple, and that amazing! And you can use any kind of soap with any kind of paint colour…. It doesn’t get better than that!

Once you are ready, start painting your new mixture onto your cards. You will need to do 2 – 3 coats to ensure the text is covered up properly and to give yourself a nice amount of scratch coating for itching off 😉

Make sure to let each coat to dry before painting your next layer on too, other wise you will end up with a bit of a lumpy mess!

*Ta*Da*
Oooooooh! How exciting! Our first batch is all made up and ready to go…
And it works a dream!
Now you can create awesome valentines cards and fun surprises for your bezzies and they wont know how you managed it. Super cool or what?!
For those of you itching to get your hands on one of our cheeky little scratch cards, we are delighted to share that from today we will be sending out one card with each transaction made in our etsy shop! Scratch off the silver panel to reveal your reward and its special code. We will send out your surprise print / card or pencil with your next purchase or you will be able to redeem 10% or 15% off your next order. How exciting!
We hope you enjoy our scratch card tutorial lovelies 😀
we’d love to see what you make with this amazing recipe!
Good luck everyone ….

Looks better than mine. Prepare for scratch card spammers! Even when I had Captcha it didn’t stop the spam I got.

Oh! I didn’t realize you had done one! Was it a while ago? The same idea? It’s a goodie 😀
I guess people who are spammers, spam. Their waste of precious time… they’d be better off making!

Liquid soap you would use to wash dirty dishes by hand, like Fairy Liquid if you know what I mean 🙂

Mine won’t scratch. I’m using acrylic and persil washing liquid and have tried 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1, but none work. I have painted them in multiple layers till the writing disappears on the paper. Any ideas what i am doing wrong? Thanks

Are you using a shiney card? Because it won’t work unless there is a coating on the paper. . . hopefully that’ll help 🙂 x

Thanks heaps. I ended up covering the area in sellotape first and that worked. Which supports your assertion.
